Diagnosis

Daniel Is Diagnosed With EoE

2018 AGREE Consensus Diagnostic Criteria for EoE1

Use the arrows below to view more about the Criteria

Symptoms

Patients with clinical presentation suggestive of EoE

Dysphagia, chest pain,
food impaction1
May include comorbidities such as asthma, atopic dermatitis,
or food allergies1

Endoscopic Assessment

May move to an EGD

EREFS score obtained from upper endoscopy to assess esophageal rings, longitudinal furrows, exudates, edema, strictures, or narrow caliber esophagus1

Histologic Assessment

Diagnosis can only be confirmed by upper endoscopy with biopsy*

Esophageal biopsy specimens should be obtained from 2 or more esophageal levels. Diagnosis is confirmed with an esophageal eosinophilia level of ≥15 eos/hpf (60 eos/mm2)1*

Exclusion of
Non-EoE Disorders

Patients with ≥15 eos/hpf should be evaluated for non-EoE disorders

Non-EoE disorders that cause or potentially contribute to esophageal eosinophilia include eosinophilic gastritis, GERD, achalasia, hypereosinophilic syndrome, Crohn’s disease, among others1

Case based on hypothetical patient.
*Per the 2017 UEG/EAACI/ESPGHAN/EUREOS Guidelines, ≥6 biopsies should be obtained from ≥2 different locations in the esophagus, typically in the distal and proximal halves of the esophagus.2
